David Cafiero is an interior designer, an event planner (with partner Thom Lussier), and the proprietor of Cafiero Select, a gallery, antiques, and home goods store located in Manhattan’s East Village. Born and raised in the Hudson Valley, David Cafiero has been many things: forester in his family’s lumber business; commercial fisherman on New England’s coast; private yacht chef and mate throughout the Caribbean; caterer and café owner in New York City. His style is eclectic, pragmatic, quietly sensual, like a Yankee just returned from early 20th century Paris. A longtime resident of Provincetown, he has also been deeply influenced by its salt-air worn woods, shifting, elemental light, and its long relationship with abstract expressionism.
His design practice Grey Gardens, his event planning, and his shop are all facets of his unique, cosmopolitan sensibility and a lifetime of travel and collecting from Paris to Australia to the Bahamas. While there is no “typical” Cafiero interior—he excels at helping each client express his or her personality and vision—he is fearless and exact at blending disparate elements. A Cafiero room could easily and seamlessly include sculptural brass tusks against walls covered in sisal grasscloth, a James Mont sofa done in emerald-green mohair, and an antique Baluch prayer rug. From the selection of a wall finish or floral arrangement to choosing which wine to pair with pan-roasted trout, he is as precise as he is adventurous.
David has completed numerous residential and commercial projects since Grey Gardens’ inception in 2003 and is presently decorating a townhome in London’s Notting Hill, a loft on Bond Street in New York, an apartment on West End Avenue, a therapist’s office, and a beach house in Norwalk, Connecticut. His work has been featured in Women’s Wear Daily, House & Garden, Lonny, City Magazine, New York Daily News, Self Service and Apartamento.
