Untitled (Green Portrait) by Emily Farnham

A skulking figure emerges from the strokes of greens, browns, and oranges in this energetic hybrid of portraiture and landscape. Emily Farnham was an artist, writer, and professor. She studied with painter Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Hofmann's influence can be seen in Farnham's layering of form and color, in how she organizes abstract gestures so that her pictures teeter between recognizable forms and abstraction.
