New York Cityscape Watercolor by Bertram Hartman, 1939

This watercolor cityscape was created by the Kansas-born American modernist, Bertram Hartman (1882-1960). He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and, like many of his fellow American artists before him, in Europe. Hartman painted cityscapes with a touch of Cubism, with skyscrapers and other city vistas viewed from multiple, dynamic angles. The artist's work is in the collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Brooklyn Museum, among others.
