Untitled (Vinnie with Carrots) by Michael Stuetz

The red backdrop in this Michael Stuetz photograph grabs you first and makes you focus on the strange collection of details: the shirtless and shoeless young man holding a carrot, the bundle of hay he is sitting on, his big feet, the woodgrain of the floor, and the antlered moose and deer whose heads emerge from outside the frame as if regarding the young man. It's a dramatic picture as much as it is a formal consideration of space and color. In other words, it has stories to tell.

Stuetz, a New York-based photographer, has had numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in group shows in the U.S. and internationally. He received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts and an MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Recently, Stuetz's "Bullfight" photographs were shown in a solo exhibition at Cafiero Select Home.
